A 911 dispatcher with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office accused of keeping $1.2 million mistakenly deposited into her account, now faces charges.
The Jefferson Parish District Attorney's Office formally filed charges against 33-year-old Kelyn Spadoni according to Nola.com.
Prosecutors say Spadoni kept $1,205,619 that financial corporation Charles Schwab & Co. had mistakenly transferred to a brokerage account she owned back in February.
The company admitted it intended to transfer only $82.56. After the bank realized the error they tried to reclaim the transfer but say the money was already withdrawn from the account and Spdoni ignored calls from Charles Schwab employees according to court records.
The financial service company notified the Sheriff’s Office of the banking error and Spadoni was arrested on April 7 and charged with theft of over $25,000. Spadoni had worked for the JPSO 911 call center for four years before her arrest.
"She has no legal claim to that money, even if it was put in there by mistake. It was an accounting error," said Sheriff's Office spokesperson Capt. Jason Rivarde.
The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in April says Spadoni signed an agreement to return the money. So far, 75% of the money is returned says Nola.com.
Spadoni’s next court appearance for the criminal case is August 2.
