Plenty of Louisiana residents are anxiously awaiting the beginning of crawfish season. Thanks to milder weather so far this year, Louisiana Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain has good news for mudbug lovers.

“We are hearing some very good news. A number of crawfish farmers have been increasing their acreage,” Strain explained.“We may have over 360,000 acres of crawfish. The weather and the rice crop have been good. If we can get adequate rainfall, I think we’ll have a bumper crop of crawfish this season,” he went on to say.

Strain emphasizes that Louisiana diners should “ask before you eat” at local restaurants to make sure the seafood being served is from Louisiana, as crawfish farmers rely on local businesses using the local seafood harvest. He’s also hoping that the season may start just a touch early, as the weather has been mild and no hard freezes are projected. “It’s going to be a really exciting crawfish season. It’s really looking good,” Strain

Strain says he also expects shrimp and oysters to be plentiful in the region and expects the same weather conditions giving a boost to the crawfish harvest to benefit those seafood crops as well.
