Fans of extreme sports from around the country and across the globe will descend upon the Crescent City this weekend. The inaugural X Games Championship will be held in New Orleans and the Caesars Superdome is undergoing a massive transformation ahead of the event. While fans are used to seeing field turf and goal posts in the dome, they’ll instead be treated to motorbikes and skate ramps.
Kevin O’ Connor is the Chief Marketing Officer for the X Games and says fans will be treated to the absolute best in skateboarding, motocross, BMX, and more along with a fresh new format. “This is the first-ever MoonPay X Games League. We still have our individual sports, but now we have athletes that have the ability to compete and earn points as a team,” he explains.
So, why choose New Orleans? “I think when we talk about championships, there’s no more iconic championship city than New Orleans. It just made a lot of sense for us. We love the venue and have been looking at it for a long time. When you think about all the Super Bowls, collegiate bowl games, Final Fours, etcetera that have happened in New Orleans, there was no better place,” O’ Connor told WWL listeners.
Along with elite athletes competing at the highest level, there will be plenty of fun events surrounding the championship action as well. We’re going to have a fun ‘X Fest’ area set up outside Champion’s Square featuring nightly musical performances in the Smoothie King Center as well,” O’ Connor emphasized.
The X Games Championship action and all the accompanying festivities take place from July 24-26th at the Caesars Superdome, Champion's Square, and neighboring Smoothie King Center. Tickets are still available for the events at xgames.com.
