The self-confessed killer New Orleans Saints player Will Smith has been granted bail.
A judge earlier this morning set bail for Cardell Hayes at $225,000.
Hayes was convicted of shooting Will Smith following a traffic accident and subsequent altercation back in 2016.
Hayes shot Smith eight times, Smith’s wife Racquel was also injured by gunfire.
He was tried and found guilty of murder on a split verdict decision.
Hayes was sentenced to 25-years-to-life in prison.
However, the verdict was overturned when split verdicts were declared unconstitutional by the U.S.
Supreme Court.
In his bid for a new trial, Hayes defense team requested bail of $150,000. A decision that was pushed back with Judge Camille Buras issues the current amount.
Hayes will still need to submit to conditions, which include wearing an ankle monitor.
According to the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate Hayes’ family has said he will live with his girlfriend at her home in Seabrook, in New Orleans East.
Broadcast reports say they are preparing to post bail immediately.
Racquel Smith has testified in opposition to Hayes being granted bail. "I was innocent. I didn’t have a gun. I spoke politely to this man,” She testified. "I have struggled. I have fought to walk again. I have fought to be a woman again."
District Attorney Jason Williams’ office has said they will pursue a charge of manslaughter against Hayes.
