Analyst: Turnout will decide who wins presidency

Election
WWL

We're one day away from Election Day.

Tomorrow, Americans will decide whether Vice President Kamala Harris or former president Donald Trump will become the 47th President of the United States. According to one political analyst, one factor alone will decide who wins.

"It's a turnout, turnout, turnout, and more turnout game," JMC Analytics pollster John Couvillon said.

While we'll be bombarded with campaign ads on television and radio for the next day-and-a-half, Couvillon believes they won't have any impact on who voters choose.

"Opinions of the candidates have been pretty firmly set in stone with 95 to 97 percent even a few months ago already knowing who they're going to vote for."

Couvillon says Harris and Trump need to focus on getting their supporters to the polls tomorrow. According to Couvillon, Election Day turnout will be the biggest factor in who wins, even though Louisiana and other areas set early voting records.

"So the numbers are robust, but they're down relative to 2020," Couvillon said. "More specifically, the 70 million voter number that I'm telling you about as we speak, that is compared to 85 million who had voted by this time in 2020."

That's why Couvillon says it's paramount for the candidates and their surrogates to push their supporters to the polls instead of trying to convince voters to pick them.

"It's purely a turnout exercise," Couvillon said. "Persuasion at this point is a waste of time. You want to absolutely make sure that your voters come out on Tuesday, assuming they have not already early voted."

Because tomorrow's election is a federal election, polls in Louisiana will open at 6 a.m. They'll remain open until 8 p.m. WWL will have full Election Night coverage starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
