Archbishop warns parishes that they will help pay archdiocese's abuse claims

New Orleans Catholic Archbishop Gregory Aymond told parishes, schools, and charities that they will share the burden of paying legal judgments against the archdiocese.

NOLA.com reports the archbishop notified clergy and laity in a letter that the cost of paying claims was greater than they expected.

"When we filed Chapter 11 reorganization in 2020, I was advised by legal counsel that the Chapter 11 proceedings would only impact our administrative offices and not the apostolates – parishes, schools and ministries," said Aymond. "Unfortunately, this is no longer the case.

"We now know there must be a contribution from the apostolates. We do not yet know what that total contribution will be or what will be asked of each entity."
