Even though efforts to recall New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell have been unsuccessful so far, petition organizers have vowed to continue their efforts.
Republican Louisiana State Senator Cameron Henry talked to WWL’s Newell Normand this week about legislation that could impact recall elections in the state, including Senate Bill 123.
“To me, it should become a public record once it’s actually submitted to the registrar of voters,” said Henry of recall petitions.
Normand noted that, with the Cantrell recall efforts, “a lot of folks felt like they would be retaliated against,” and he thinks that could also be an issue in other parts of the state.
“I’m not an attorney,” said Henry. “I’ve never really fooled with recalls and anything else before, but you just see these glowing mistakes… let's just try to find a way to clean it up first.”
Henry also discussed voter registration lists with Normand, including the cumbersome process to remove names from voter lists. He said the form to remove a name “is longer than the form you have to fill out to be on the voter list,” and that it needs to be improved.
“The process is antiquated and there’s… there’s an easier and more effective way to do it,” he said.
