It looks like WWL’s afternoon talk-host Scoot is going to get his wish.
The Street Renaming Commission considered a plethora replacement names for Lee Circle before deciding and voting for changing the name to Leah Chase Circle.
The idea of changing it from Lee-to-Leah was championed by Scoot on air after the iconic restauranteur passed away in 2019.
The final vote was 7-to-1 infavor of Leah Chase Circle.
Commissioner Kevin Jackson, who had supported honoring New Orleans desegregationist Dorothy May Taylor with the circle’s name, cast the lone dissenting vote.
Other former streets named for Confederates, segregationists, white supremacists, and slave holders all are slated to come down and potentially be replaced when the City Council gets the recommendations from the Commission.
Many obvious Confederate street names, like Robert E. Lee Boulevard, are being changed to reflect the great musical contributors from New Orleans. Lee Boulevard is proposed to become Allan Toussaint, named for the great songwriter, singer, and musician.
More than 34 streets, including iconic Tulane Avenue, are up for renaming.
This initial step, which can be altered if needed before going to the City Council, was worked on for more than four hours Tuesday afternoon by the Street Renaming Commission.
