Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman joined WWL's Newell Normand today, to talk about the zoo's canceled then reinstated "back the blue" event with the NOPD.
Forman said the decision to cancel "Blue at the Zoo" earlier this month during national Police Appreciation Week was the wrong decision.
Forman said he was concerned about having to hire police to keep protesters at bay while trying to entertain police inside the zoo.
"So our real intent was not to not back the police, it was to make sure the event would be one that they could enjoy, that we could come together as a community in a meaningful way," said Forman. "Having said that, thought, if we had to do it over again, Monday morning quartebacking, I think the police, and Audubon would prefer that we have an event, let's go on with the vent that we scheduled originally."
Forman said they thought that in the wake of the Derek Chauvin murder trial and demonstrations related to that case, waiting would allow emotions to cool.
"We made a mistake by thinking there was a better way of doing this," Forman said.
Forman says Audubon is rescheduling an event to show their appreciation for NOPD.
