After holding police at bay for nearly eight hours, a hit-and-run suspect is dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The drama unfolded Friday afternoon at the Old No. 77 Hotel on Tchoupitoulas Street Friday afternoon.
Arriving officers knocked at the door of the man around 2:45pm.
The man opened the door, with the latch still in place.
Officers retreated when they saw the man armed with a gun.
SWAT was called in and the hotel evacuated.
Finally, around 9:15pm NOPD Bomb Squad sent in a robot to breach the door and search for the suspect.
Robot cameras showed the suspect laying on the bathroom floor with a gunshot to the head.
He was transported to a local hospital just before 10pm but later died of his wounds.
