The Shrine on Airline is on track to get some big renovations. Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO) Executive Director Jerry Bologna says he expects the redesign to help draw new and different attractions to the site. He believes a more adaptable venue could widen the possibilities for what events the Shrine can host moving forward.

“I think everything is in play. Soccer is on the top of everyone’s mind with the World Cup going on, but that’s something we’ve explored over the years. But, everything is exploratory right now,” Bologna notes.

While many people in and around the New Orleans area have fond memories of watching minor league baseball games at The Shrine, the minor league model has changed according to Bologna. Those changes require a more flexible venue capable of hosting a bevy of different events, he says.

“We had a long run with the Houston Astros as their minor league affiliate and that was probably the heyday. But, that minor league model changed and you’re with a different team every year now. That makes it hard to grow any appreciation for watching the players come up through the ranks. So, many of those minor league teams have gone by the wayside,” Bologna adds.

Bologna emphasizes that the redesign will allow for a more diverse array of potential attractions, which he believes is crucial for the site moving forward. Outdoor concerts could be hosted there, along with soccer games and other special events.

As far as timelines go, Bologna expects the construction at the Shrine to last anywhere from one year to 18 months or so. Will you recognize The Shrine when all is said and done? The JEDCO Director thinks engrained memories will play a part, but locals will still be impressed. “I think everyone has some memories from out there, so you’ll recognize it. But, it’s going to have a whole new fresh look and feel to it,” Bologna went on to emphasize.
