Many residents of Lafourche Parish today are advise to boil their water before consuming it.
"The Lafourche Parish Water District No. 1 is issuing a BOIL WATER ADVISORY for some Sixth Ward communities and portions of Thibodaux," Purification Water Quality Supervisor Jenny Robichaux said in a news release.
This advisory
includes all customers serviced by the District:
• in Chackbay along and adjoining Hwy 20 (from Choctaw Rd. to the Lafourche-St. James parish line)
• in Choctaw along and adjoining Choctaw Rd. and Sanchez Rd.
• in Kraemer along and adjoining Hwy 307
• in Thibodaux along and adjoining Laurel Valley Rd.
Officials say a leak in a water main led to pressures dropping to levels that require a boil advisory.
"The water in the affected area is of questionable microbiological quality. Therefore, as a precaution, this Boil Water Advisory is effective immediately and will remain in effect until rescinded by the District."
The release says that it is recommended that customers included in the Boil Water Advisory disinfect their water before consuming it, making ice, brushing teeth, using it for food preparation (including fountain drinks), and for rinsing food.
"Boil water for one (1) full minute in a clean container. The one-minute starts after the water has been brought to a rolling boil. The flat taste can be eliminated by shaking the water in a clean bottle, pouring it from one clean container to another, or by adding a small pinch of salt to each quart of water that is boiled."
The boil advisory will stay in place until samples collected from the water supply show the water is safe.
