Business: N.O. riverfront development talks underway

New Orleans developer Lou Lauricella says his River District Group is in advanced talks to buy the Market Street Power Plant and other riverfront tracts to develop the Morial Convention Center's "entertainment district" project. The board of the Convention Center and a panel of experts decide who gets the project this week. Also in the running is Muse Landing, led by Paul Flower's Woodward Build and Design.

Officials at the Port of New Orleans predict a $20 million dollar loss due to cruise ships being docked for more than a year, though the regional economic impact from the loss of passengers visiting before and after sailing could be many times that number.


So it’s welcome news that American Cruise Lines’ new American Jazz is off on its seven-night cruise to Memphis from New Orleans, marking the return of Mississippi River cruises after a year-long pandemic hiatus. American is voluntarily limiting the number of passengers on its ships to 75% of capacity.

A positive start to the week, with the Dow 102 points higher, the S&P up 27, and the Nasdaq gaining 162. Futures are pointed toward a lower market open.
