Slidell police today honored Leslie Smith, the citizen who gave a Slidell police officer a lift as the officer chased down a shoplifting suspect Saturday.
"She stepped up that day and demonstrated bravery, civic responsibility, and an unwavering commitment to public safety," said Slidell police chief Daniel Seuzeneau.

The officer didn't get Smith's name that day. When police asked the Good Samaritan to come forward, Smith did, but said she didn't want any special recognition.
Slidell Police managed to convince her otherwise.
Smith says she's often been asked since then, "what was she thinking." She says she really wasn't.
"I wanted to help out and I just thought, 'what could I do?' and I saw him working so hard and if I could help out in a tiny way," said Smith.
