Before you know it, voters will be casting ballots in the New Orleans mayor's race -- mail-in ballots will be sent out soon, and early voting is getting closer.

That is why candidates looking to make a move are going negative.

Pollster John Couvillon of JMC Analytics says if any of the campaigns are to go negative on their opponents, now is the time.

“Whatever attacks you're doing, there's not going to be this instantaneous impact on the polls,” Couvillon said. “In other words, if you want an attack to be made that's effective, you really need to start yesterday.”

Couvillon says the message needs time to sink in, because once voters start sending in mail-in ballots, or vote during early voting, changing their minds does no good.

Couvillion says this week’s campaign finance reports will also be important, because people who are inclined to give money to a campaign often have a “follow-the-leader” mentality.

“You could see some kind of like herd mentality from insiders after they see the finance reports, depending on what the cash-on-hand numbers are for either Duplessis or Thomas or Moreno going into the final week,” he said.
