Why will it take weeks for New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell to interview three finalists for the job of chief of NOPD? The mayor says it is too crucial a matter to rush it.
"It's taking so long because it's very important," the mayor said during a news conference Wednesday morning. "This is one of the most, I would say, important decisions that I will' have to make as mayor of New Orleans and as I look at the 894 days left in this term."
The mayor said she did not want to chain herself to a timetable for an announcement.
"I'm going to not box myself in. I'm not taking long just to take long. I want to render a decision," Cantrell said, "and I take them very seriously and this is just another one of them."
Cantrell has received a list of finalists from the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and wants to add a fourth to the list: David Franklin. Franklin, with the Albuquerque, New Mexico police department, made it to the semi-finalists round but withdrew his name from consideration. However, because of the high score he received during the IACP vetting process, Cantrell says she would like to speak with him.
