Organizers of the petition drive to put a recall election of New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell up for a vote have delivered the list of names of people who signed the petition to the Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate.
Recall vice-chair Eileen Carter said she gave a digital list to the publication.
Once someone signs their name to a recall petition, it becomes public record, and as custodians of those records, the recall chair and co-chair are required to share it with anyone who submits a public records request.
When the Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate requested it, NoLatoya.org resisted, citing worries that publicly identifying signees could leave them vulnerable to harassment and intimidation.
The newspaper took the recall campaign to court, where it was agreed that the recall organizers would deliver the names to the publication once the petitions were turned over to the registrar of voters' office.
