New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell today said the effort to kick her out of office is a Republican-funded effort to violate the civil rights of black people in the city.
"This is really no longer, right, about recalling me as the mayor of the city," Cantrell told reporters. "It is about disfranchisement of our voters, particularly black voters."
She said the movement to remove her from office is a matter of civil rights.
"It really should give all of us concern," the mayor insisted. "The recall campaign has just relied on lies and misinformation."
She said the recall effort is a call to the community to rise above what is playing out in New Orleans today. She likened it to the suppression during the Jim Crow era.
"Black people in the black community have been used to be the focal point, to be the ones leading the line, so to speak."
