The petitions calling for a recall of New Orleans Mayor LaToyal Cantrell have been delivered to Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards.
The New Orleans Registrar of Voters delivered the documents today.
It is not clear how many signatures were verified. The registrar's office did not say publicly.
That number is also still in question as Cantrell has filed suit challenging the number the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office and recall organizers agreed on after settling a lawsuit.
If there are enough signatures, Governor Edwards would call an election.
If there are not an adequate number, the recall effort is over.
Attorney Ryan Luminais represents Registrar Sandra Wilson. He said in a statement, "Every document received from the organizers has been reviewed and certified twice."
He did not say if the threshold to force a recall was met. The number of needed signatures was just shy of 50,000 before the settlement between recall organizers and Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin. They agreed to reduce that number to nearly 45,000. The recall campaign insisted there were more than 32,000 active voters listed who had died or moved out of the city. After negotiations, the sides agreed to reduce the active voter list by 25,000; reducing the number of needed signatures by 5,000.
This is a developing story, we will update it as information becomes available.
