At a Hurricane Delta update press conference, New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell says although the city is outside the storms’ predicted ‘cone’; the city is still prepared for heavy rain and tropical force winds.

“The tropical storm force winds are possible as early as Thursday leading into Friday morning,” Mayor Cantrell said. “While there is still some level of uncertainty in terms of the exact intensity and the impacts, we know we are facing life threatening storm surge outside of the levee protection system. Damaging winds is something we are looking at as well.”

She says the threats of tornadoes are possible with Hurricane Delta.

“We are predicting, right now, a four to six feet of storm surge,” said Director of New Orleans Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, Collin Arnold. “So what we would say to our areas outside our levee protection; Venetian Isles, Irish Bayou, Lake Catherine, this would be the time for a voluntary evacuation.”

Collin says that four to six feet storm surge means street flooding which could start as early as Thursday.
