A New Orleans jury convicted Cardell Hayes of manslaughter in the shooting death of former New Orleans Saints star Will Smith.
The jury delivered a not guilty verdict on a charge of attempted manslaughter of Smith's widow, Racquel.
Jurors rejected the defense's argument that Hayes shot Smith in self-defense after the two were involved in a vehicle collision in April 2016.
"Since April 9, 2016, my family and I have been living a nightmare. In the eight years since losing Will, each life milestone and family memory brings heartache—We miss our Superman," said Racquel Smith in a statement. "He was a wonderful husband, father, and friend, and we will never stop celebrating William Smith, the man we were blessed enough to have on this earth for 34 short years."
Hayes will be sentenced in March.
Judge Camille Buras originally sentenced Hayes to 25 years in prison for the crime, after a jury decided 10-2 to convict him. That conviction was overturned on a Supreme Court ruling that non-unanimous jury convictions are unconstitutional.
