The University of New Orleans shared jarring news this week regarding layoffs and record low enrollment.

The school is beloved in the community and many are worried about its future. President of UNO, Kathy Johnson says, the news does not mark the end, but the opportunity for a beginning for the school.

“The glory days are certainly not behind us. I wouldn’t have come if I didn’t think there was a path forward.”

Johnson came onboard as the president in the fall of 2023 and is the only woman to assume the role in the school’s history. She says taking a look at opportunities to expand their online offerings could offer some positive results.

“When things change in the market, you got to adapt the way that you deliver your business.”

UNO will have to make some changes and the leadership of the school will start about the work of making those changes.

President Johnson says she is committed to forging a path forward to meet the educational needs of the community.

“My intent is to diagnose how we can be meeting the demands of this region and then we’ve got to pivot and adapt to doing what’s best for learners in this area.”
