Now that the former Lindy Boggs hospital is being torn down, what other Katrina-era eyesores are left?
One of the largest sights not to come back since Hurricane Katrina, the former Six Flags amusement park, is in limbo as plans to build a sports complex, water park, and other amenities have stalled.
"Six Flags is kind of the last remaining hulk that truly is a reminder of Katrina," said GNO Inc. President and CEO Michael Hecht, although he says he remains confident the redevelopment of that land will work itself out.
Another massive structure blighted since the Hurricane, the old Charity Hospital building, is set for redevelopment by Tulane University.
"That's happening, that's an incredibly existing, consequential project," said Hecht. "When that gets redeveloped by Tulane, it's going to take an area that's essentially an urban blind spot right now, and it's going to reinvigorate it with people working, people living, with research, with education, with amenities."
And while it's not Katrina related, Hecht says the former Naval Support Activity building in the Bywater is already being renovated into mixed income housing.
"It's looking beautiful, it's got all the windows in, it's been cleaned up," he said.
Another long-standing blighted structure, the Plaza Tower, presents challenges that so far, have not found a solution.
"On one hand, it's hard to figure out what to do that's going to make sense, economically," said Hecht. "On the other side, it's actually really expensive to bring down."
