Leelani Brooks, the 9-year-old girl struck in the head by a bullet as she fled gunfire on her street in Algiers, has not died, but has been declared brain dead, WWL-TV reports.

The TV station reports that Michael Willis, who identified himself as a family friend, initially told them Brooks had passed away. However, he later clarified that she has been declared brain dead.

Brooks has been on life support since the violence on Monday afternoon. Police say she was running for cover when the shots rang out in the 2900 block of Lawrence St.

The day after the shooting, police on Tuesday arrested 19-year-old Evans Rogers after a standoff at a Terrytown motel. Cops booked him on attempted second-degree murder in connection with the crime.
