A Chalmette family is dealing with unimaginable heartbreak after a six-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle and killed Monday morning.
The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office told WWL-TV it has arrested a 41-year-old man on hit and run charges.
The incident happened near East Liberaux and Laplace streets in Chalmette.
According to reports, the child's mother let him sleep before school this morning, after he spent Sunday celebrating his birthday.
The child left the house, and when he didn't return, his mother found he had been struck by a car.
The boy was a kindergarten student at Meraux Elementary.
"We are deeply saddened by this news and are praying for him, his family and all of our Meraux Elementary family during this most difficult time," the school said in a statement.
