With the Southern Decadence festival making its return to the French Quarter, the city of New Orleans Friday announced traffic restrictions for the area.
"In anticipation of large crowds, the New Orleans Police Department will restrict traffic to ensure the safety of pedestrians," the city announced. The French Quarter will be closed to vehicular traffic from Toulouse St. to St. Phillip St.
Closures will be effective nightly from Friday, Sept. 2 through Sunday, Sept. 4, from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.
-Drivers should be made aware that they will not be able to cross Bourbon Street
-All streets from Iberville Street to Toulouse Street will be open to cross Bourbon Street
-No vehicles will be allowed to cross Bourbon Street
-Only EMERGENCY VEHICLES will be allowed to cross Bourbon Street
-Officers will close off streets leading to Bourbon Street to vehicular traffic
-Emergency vehicles that only need to cross Bourbon Street should do so on the uptown side of St. Peter Street or on the downtown side of Dumaine Street
In addition to traffic changes, the city is also restricting parking in these areas:
-2 p.m. to 4 a.m. overnight Friday, Saturday and Sunday
-Bourbon Street from Canal to St. Phillip streets
-700 and 800 blocks of all side streets from St. Peter Street to Dumaine Street
The city says additional intermittent street closures might be required as crowd size warrants.
Residents can also expect street closures in the French Quarter and Treme along the route of the Southern Decadence walking parade (click here for more).
