Cleanup efforts are under way in Tangipahoa and St. Tammany Parishes after tornadoes cut through several communities, damaging homes and businesses and knocking down trees.

The heaviest of the damage happened in and around Kentwood. According to Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Gerald Sticker, damage in the East Fork community just north of Kentwood is extensive. According to a post on the TPSO Facebook page, Sticker said deputies are working with firefighters and other first responders to “assess and address the impacts, which appear to include, at this time, 30 homes, dozens of downed trees, (and) downed power lines.” However, Sticker said nobody was injured.

Louisiana State Police is helping the TPSO with recovery efforts in the Kentwood area.

Meanwhile, St. Tammany Parish deputies say downed trees and power lines are blocking one road near Covington.

“STPSO deputies are on scene at Three Rivers Rd. at Wolverine Dr. in the Covington area, where trees and power lines are down, blocking the roadway,” a St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson wrote on the agency’s Facebook page. “Please avoid this area and stay off the roads if possible so our heroes can do their jobs safely and efficiently.”

Deputies say a water spout moved onshore from Lake Pontchartrain near Madisonville Saturday afternoon. However, the tornado warning spawned by that twister was canceled shortly afterward. Deputies have not reported any damage or injuries resulting from that tornado.
