Closed bars, Bourbon St. checkpoints? Reportedly under consideration for Mardi Gras

Among some of the ideas on the table for preventing spread of coronavirus during Mardi Gras is closing bars and limiting access to Bourbon Street, The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate reports.

A final decision has not been made. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has been meeting with public safety and health officials to come up with a plan to prevent large gatherings. A maskless gathering in the French Quarter last weekend angered the mayor, who called it dangerous.


Restaurants reportedly would remain open, but it is not certain how the city will handle bars that have received temporary food service permits that have enabled them to stay open.

Mayor Cantrell has scheduled an announcement for tomorrow.
