The fallout has continued from the Los Angeles Times editorial that tore down the LSU women’s basketball team before their Sweet 16 victory over UCLA.
On Tuesday, CNN’s Jim Acosta weighed in, ripping the L.A. Times and its editorial staff for letting the piece get published.
“You know, great newspaper. I mean, what a dumb mistake,” Acosta said, via Mediaite. “They published this commentary piece on LSU’s coach Kim Mulkey. After the backlash, the newspaper had to add this editorial note to it, saying the commentary did not meet the editorial standards of the newspaper.
“The piece referred to LSU as, quote, ‘dirty debutantes.’ I mean, what? I don’t understand how this even got published.”
The article first gained national attention after LSU coach Kim Mulkey tore it to shreds verbally during a press conference. Since then, the story has been amended to remove some of its most inflammatory language, including the “dirty debutantes” line.
“The original version of this commentary did not meet Times editorial standards. It has been edited to remove language that was inappropriate and offensive. We apologize to the LSU basketball program and to our readers,” an editor's note read after the changes.
