The New Orleans Police Department says it has arrested a murder suspect less than 24 hours after the crime happened.

Police were called to the 4200 block of Royal St. shortly before 5:30 p.m. Thursday, after friends of 61-year-old Michael Craig Hankins called 911 when they discovered his body inside a residence.

Police say Hankins' friends had grown concerned after not hearing from him for several days.

According to NOPD, detectives learned that prior to the discovery of the victim, Trevor Delrie had been stopped by law enforcement in Alexandria, allegedly driving the victim's vehicle, and in possession of Hankins' wallet and cellular phone.

Police say Delrie was known to stay at the victim's home on occasion.

"Upon further investigation, NOPD issued an arrest warrant for Delrie who was subsequently arrested today with the assistance of the Alexandria Police Department," said NOPD.

Police ask anyone with additional information about the crime to call NOPD Homicide at (504) 658-5300, or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111 or toll free at (877) 903-7867 (STOP).

Callers to Crimestoppers do not have to leave their names and may be eligible for a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest and indictment.
