The New Orleans Police Department announced Friday afternoon that officers arrested three teenage suspects in an attempted carjacking this week in Algiers.

Shortly after 5:30 Wednesday afternoon, a woman had parked her car at a shopping center on Holiday Dr. between Gen. DeGaulle Dr. and MacArthur Blvd. The woman left running vehicle to enter a store, leaving her 12-year-old son and 11-month old baby daughter in the car. That's when the armed suspects approached, pointed a gun at the 12-year-old, and told him to get out.

The pre-teen grabbed the baby and got out of the car. Police say the suspects jumped in and began to drive away, but then stopped, got out, got into another vehicle, and fled.

Detectives learned that later Wednesday evening, three teenage boys had been arrested on the Eastbank in connection with a vehicle crash at Canal St. and N. Villere. The vehicle matched the description of the one the Algiers carjacking suspects used to flee the scene.

That getaway car had been reported stolen from Central City earlier that day.

Two of the three juveniles arrested, a 15-year-old and a 13-year-old, were identified as the ones who attempted to take the car in Algiers. A third suspect, a 16-year-old, is believed by police to be the driver of the car they fled the scene in. Police say the 15-year-old had a gun on him when they arrested him.

Police say the 16-year-old is also a suspect in a vehicle theft on Henry Clay Ave. in Uptown New Orleans on Monday.
