Morrell: Cops may still enforce new ban on a variety of items at parades

Conflicting reports have some people wondering what they can and cannot bring to route when Mardi Gras parades start tomorrow in New Orleans.

Turns out, new laws passed since last Carnival Season may or may not be enforced.

"I think where there is confusion is, and I'll be very clear, we did NOT repeal the law," New Orleans City Councilman JP Morrell told WWL's Tommy Tucker.

Morrell says while they have told police that issues of homeland security and public safety take priority; the laws banning items including canopies, couches, grills, boiling pots and personal port-a-potties are still on the books.

"The law is not repealed; and if NOPD says, 'I'm tearing this tent down and throwing it away... they can still do it," Morrell advised.

Morrell advises that if people behave in a civil manner and "are not jerks," they are more likely to not face enforcement.

"If you just kinda do things that are common sense, in all likelihood, you should be okay."

The confusion started after the New Year's Day terror attack on Bourbon Street.  Some city leaders indicated there would be a shift in focus away from the new rules.
