New Orleans Police say when they were dispatched to investigate a crash in the Lower Ninth Ward, they discovered a shooting victim.
"The NOPD is investigating a shooting that occurred this morning at North Galvez & Egania St.," cops said in a news release. "The initial call came out as a car accident. Upon arrival officers found an adult male inside a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds."
Police say the victim was hospitalized, but did not provide any information on his condition.
"The initial call was made at 2:08am as an accident, it was later changed to a shooting."
The Metro Crime Commission says that shootings this year continue to dramatically outpace the number seen just a few years ago. Compared to 2019, shootings are up 132%. There have been more than 140 shootings this year. The number of shootings is 52% more than in 2020. Compared to last year, shooting incidents were down 3% as of Monday.
