UPDATE: Police say Tatisha Refuge turned herself in around 1 p.m. Monday.
We are learning more about the shooting death of a toddler over the holiday weekend in New Orleans.
Police say the three-year-old boy was visiting New Orleans from out of town, with his mother and ten-year-old brother.
"The shooting occurred inside of the residence. The gunshot wound was determined to be self-inflicted by the three-year-old from an unsecured, loaded firearm."
NOPD Sgt. Ron Howard says the gun belongs to the woman renting the house in the 2200 block of Willow Street. He says she tampered with evidence and fled the home after the shooting.
"We are pleading on behalf of the mother, who at some point has to drive back to Texas with one less child, for Ms. Tatisha Refuge (above) to turn herself in to police at an police station."
The child died at the hospital Saturday night.
A news release says, "Anyone with information as to Refuge's whereabouts is asked to contact NOPD's Special Victim's Section at (504) 658-5525 or Crimestoppers anonymously at (504) 822-1111."
