The St. John the Baptist Parish Coroner has identified seven of the people killed in the crash that happened on I-55 in Monday morning's heavy fog.
They were:
Nakia Gaines, age 49, New Orleans
Mason Gaines, age 6, Madisonville
Fernando Francisco DeMoraes, age 49, Chalmette
Jose Elias Valle, age 38, Chalmette
Corrine Hebert, age 21, Plaquemine
James Fleming, age 87, Lake St. Louis, Missouri
Qutub Singh Negi, age 47, Ponchatoula
Louisiana State Police reported eight fatalities in the wrecks. Authorities are trying to determine if remains are that of another victim, or someone already identified.
The crashes occurred on the elevated highway that stretches between Ponchatoula south to the I-55's junction with I-10, just west of the Bonnet Carre spillway. More than 150 vehicles were involved in separate collisions that happened on both north and southbound lanes.
