The New Orleans City Council's Criminal Justice Committee meets this morning, and it will discuss how to get tough on drivers who are creating mayhem in the streets.
The council's action comes days after several New Orleans intersections were blocked by drivers spinning their tires and skidding around in circles, creating smoke while onlookers gathered.
Video posted to social media showed some in the crowd waving guns. Another video showed a New Orleans Police unit in the area, but not intervening to break up the event.
Criminal Justice Committee Chairman Oliver Thomas said New Orleans isn't Gotham City, and doesn't need Batman to stop this -- just strong laws that would allow them to impose steep fines on drivers and seize their vehicles.
"You'll not only have a fine, you will not only be arrested, you're going to lose your vehicle. You're going to be the Joker without a car," said Thomas. "You'll need the Riddler to figure out how to get back where you came from."
The committee is also exploring ways to punish onlookers at these events, so not only will these drivers lose their cars, they will also lose their audience.
"We're researching the best way to hold spectators accountable," said District D Councilmember Eugene Green. "It's important that we do it legal and it's important that we are able to enforce it."
The committee meets at 10 a.m. at New Orleans City Hall.
