The New Orleans City Council's Public Works Committee today will be talking with Sewerage & Water Board officials about last week's rain that caused street flooding, and the issues with drainage pumps and power.
A major Sewerage & Water Board turbine, turbine number four, was offline when massive rainfall came down on Easter Monday, April 21.
Steve Nelson, the General Superintendent of the Sewerage & Water Board, said that particular power source isn't something they can use for the type of storms that hit that day.
"Turbine 4 is a really old piece of equipment. It takes about three hours to get heated up," he told WWL's Tommy Tucker. "It's a piece of equipment that I can really only use if I know exactly when and where it is going to rain."
There were also five pumps offline, but drainage officials say the system was overwhelmed by as much as ten inches of rain that fell within a few hours.
The Public Works Committee starts at 10 a.m. at New Orleans City Hall.
