Council considers accommodating canceled krewes

Parade

Mardi Gras 2021 will be up for discussion at today's New Orleans City Council meeting.

The council is voting to protect a krewe's spot on the parade calendar if they decide they cannot roll in 2021.

"How could you possibly penalize a krewe that chose not to parade or didn't get the opportunity because of COVID?" questioned Mardi Gras Guide publisher Arthur Hardy.  "This simply codifies it into law that any krewe that can't parade this year will not lose their spot in 2022."

Hardy says the mayor's Mardi Gras advisory council also has a meeting today, as they brainstorm ways to keep crowds and krewes safe but still have parades.

"The subcommittee, made up of some medical people to come up with safe ways to do this," Hardy said. "but we're going to have to see what that looks like."

Mayor LaToya Cantrell has also asked krewes to tell her office what the latest possible date is for a go/no go order that would give krewes enough time to put together members, bands, marching clubs and other elements needed to hold a parade.
