As part of an ordinance passed Thursday by the New Orleans City Council, all city vehicles must be green by 2025.
Starting next year, the city must start buying and/or environmentally friendly vehicles in 2023. All vehicles purchased after 2025 must be electrically powered.
City Council member Helena Moreno, as part of the climate committee she chairs, sponsored the measure which mandates the city annually report on fuel economy of all vehicles in its fleet.
According to the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate there are some exceptions to the rule:
The City can hold on to gasoline powered vehicles it already owns and allows the police, fire and EMS to buy vehicles that burn fossil fuels.
The paper reports the city is positioning itself to go after federal money for climate-related matters as part of the infrastructure act.
