The New Orleans City Council has on its schedule today a vote to order Mayor LaToya Cantrell to surrender possession of the Upper Pontalba apartment unit to the French Market Corporation by this Monday, March 11. Some on the council say it never should have come to this.

"I think there is an easier way," said New Orleans City Council Member Lesli Harris.

Harris says the council made itself clear in August when it voted 5-2 to override Mayor LaToya Cantrell's veto of their decision to put Apartment 530B up for rent, rather than leave it under control of the mayor's office.

"We would have hoped that that could have been resolved earlier rather than in the way it's playing it now," she told WWL's Tommy Tucker.

Harris says the council also has important work to do on affordable housing, getting the homeless out of encampments, and other issues.

"Talking about whether or not someone turns over keys or who has the keys; it's just, it's unfortunate that we're focusing on that," Harris said.
