First he came for her campaign finance reports. Then he came for her sweet potatoes.

As he vies for re-election to the New Orleans City Council in District B, Councilman Jay H. Banks has taken his challenger, attorney Lesli Harris, to task on a number of fronts. But with the polls opening in just days for their runoff, Banks has truly taken off the gloves.

On a website run by his campaign, Banks said Harris lied about her grandmother’s sweet potato casserole.

Harris shared the recipe in question on her Instagram account the day before Thanksgiving, crediting her grandmother with the dish.

Banks though says Harris stole the recipe from the cooking website AllRecipes.com.

“Lesli is so dishonest and empty, she faked her grandmother's sweet potato casserole recipe,” the website writes. “They have phones in Ohio... she could have just called home.”

Reached for comment by NOLA.com, Harris denied the accusation of recipe theft.

“Calling out my grandmother's recipe is insulting, because my grandmother has been dead for years. They are faking the information on that website, just like they are faking the claim that I would turn Magazine Street into Bourbon Street,” Harris said, also addressing Banks’s allegation that she is a “puppet of Bourbon Street” after campaign finance reports revealed donations from a number of local nightclub owners

In the initial primary, Banks received 45% of the overall vote with Harris coming in second at 37%, leading to this Saturday’s runoff. District B encompasses Central City, the Garden District, Gert Town, and parts of Mid-City and the Warehouse District.
