Mardi Gras COVID-19 restrictions went into effect today in New Orleans.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has taken steps to try and prevent crowds from forming for Mardi Gras celebrations.
"All bars in the city of New Orleans will be closed, both indoor and outdoor, citywide," Cantrell said.
Most notably, bars have been closed throughout the city, and liquor sales in the French Quarter have been curtailed.
"Restaurant and retail stores can remain open, and residents and hotel guests will have access," said the mayor.
Police Chief Shaun Ferguson says there is an enhanced presence of NOPD officers.
"We should not do any large gatherings," the chief warned. "Throughout this weekend you will see an enhanced presence by the New Orleans Police Department."
Loitering will not be allowed in the French Quarter, on North Claiborne Ave. under the interstate, and on Frenchman Street. The restrictions will be in place through Fat Tuesday.
Cantrell said it is important to try and head off any chance of a Carnival COVID super-spreader.
"We're doing this in response to the health crisis that we are in," said Cantrell. "The consequences of taking actions -- really, not taking actions -- the costs are simply too high."
