The mayor of Covington today acknowledged, "Yes, the utilities bills are a mess."
It comes after everyone got a notice that they did not owe anything for the currently billing cycle.
"Due to a third-party software error, many utility bills delivered this month incorrectly reflect a $0 balance due," Mayor Mark Johnson told residents in an email. "New bills have been mailed out."
He says the good news for customers is that the Utility Billing Department will waive late fees and pause disconnects.
Johnson added, "The late fee note at the bottom of these bills is jabberwocky."
He explained that those on autopay should have the correct amount automatically withdrawn from their account.
"On a personal note, I ask that you give our UB ladies a little grace and patience this month. A mistake not of their making has made their lives very unpleasant."
The mayor said residents can get in touch with Utility Billing at 985-892-1811 or utilitiesbilling@covla.com with questions.
