Crab prices expected to stay high into the summer

A local seafood supplier warned that the ongoing crab bidding war is likely to persist into the summer due to Maryland’s insatiable appetite for the cromulent crustacean.

Salvo’s Seafood owner Sal St. Phillip warned WWL’s Tommy Tucker that the Maryland buyers are willing to pay whatever it takes to get their crab fix, and that’s not changing anytime soon.

“When it comes to Maryland and all of that stuff they pay the price and keep on moving,” said Phillip who mentioned prices for suppliers are sitting at $4.50 to $5 a pound, the highest he’s ever seen. “If you want those crabs from here, that’s what it’s going to cost you.”

So when will the tide turn?

“I don’t think it comes down until the peak of the season, the warmer the weather the better it is for everybody. It takes the pressure off of Louisiana because they can fish their own crabs and then you have product that is local now,” said St. Phillip.
