WWL’s resident former sheriff Newell Normand used the Wednesday edition of his radio show to analyze new policies in Orleans Parish that give district attorneys a shocking amount of control to override decisions handed down by judges and juries.
Normand said the judges in particular were elected by the people presumably because of the stances they take from the bench, and those electoral decisions are being disrespected.
“What they are saying to you is that what you desired is misguided, is wrong,” he said. “You don’t get it. You don’t get it when they steal your kid’s bike. You don’t get it when they break into your car. You don’t get it when you're having to spend money, which means there’s less for all the other economic challenges that you have in life. You don’t get it, so I’m here to right the ship of the minds and the desires of the electorate of the City of New Orleans. Be careful what you ask for, folks.”
Normand added that Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams should be placed under even more scrutiny because of this new policy.
“You will recall that I’ve taken everyone to task on public records, right?” he said. “Whether it be the governor, the state legislature, there were attempts to modify those statutes. This is something that’s really irritating as well. So NOLA.com has made a number of requests for records of these cases. The response by Jason Williams’s office is that they’re protected work product? Who’s the client? I thought we were.”
