New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams says his office will work hand-in-hand with the New Orleans Police Department to go after carjackers and other violent criminals. Williams told New Orleans City Council members he's forming a task force called the serial organized crimes initiative.
"I've been working very closely with chief Ferguson and members of his team on a launch of a serial organized crimes initiative," Williams told the council's Criminal Justice Committee. "This strike force will take NOPD's best and my office's best, tackle these most serious cases, and better confront the crime trend that we're seeing."
Williams says car burglars aren't just people stealing at random -- he says their main target is guns to steal and use to commit more crimes.
"It's a smash-the-window, go-though-your-car, seeing nothing's taken, well it turns out these folks are looking for guns," said Williams. "They're looking for guns to be used in carjackings, they're looking for guns to be used in shootings."
He says he wants to connect the dots from those break-ins, to carjackings and shootings, and put the perpetrators away.
