Today, the organizers of the Recall LaToya Cantrell petition bring the signatures they've gathered to elections officials. The recall leaders sound very bullish on their chances of forcing a recall vote to decide the New Orleans' mayor's future.
Recall vice chair Eileen Carter says Mardi Gras parades helped them boost their signature totals.
"We have had huge success on the parade route," she told WWL's Dave Cohen on The Newell Normand Show. Today, they'll bring their signatures to the registrar of voters office at New Orleans City Hall.
"We're going to make sure that we deliver it, it will be nice, organized, neat, numbered," said Carter. "It's going to be us walking in with all of these boxes. They'll be numbered and they'll be ordered."
Carter invites everyone who signed the petition or supports the recall to join them this afternoon as they march on City Hall to present the petitions. She says she wants it to be set to the sounds of a brass band as they second line into the building.
"That's what New Orleans is about. We are about music. We are about love."
It will be up to Orleans Registrar of Voters Sandra Wilson and her staff to verify the signatures. There is a five day window, once submitted, for people to add or remove their signatures. The registrar has 20 days to determine if there are enough signatures to require a recall election.
If there are enough verified signatures, it will be up to Governor John Bel Edwards to schedule an election for New Orleans voters to decide, yes or no, if LaToya Cantrell will remain as the city's mayor.
Recall organizers will deliver the signatures to the registrar’s office at New Orleans City Hall at 3 p.m.
