Debris removal begins in New Orleans Monday

If you think you can relax this weekend and watch football, you better get the hurricane debris cleaned out of your yard, first, because collection starts Monday in New Orleans.

You'll want to get this stuff bundled, bagged, and on the curb, says New Orleans deputy CAO for infrastructure Ramsey Green.

"For your private property debris, Monday is when we're going to have debris collection start," said Green.  "You've got through the weekend to gather up the stuff on your property and then you can put it out there."

City sanitation director Cynthia Sylvain Lear says some debris can be picked up in regular trash collection, if it's small enough and bundled properly.

"Bundle those small branches, four-foot lengths or less. Bag your leaves," she said. "You can put up to six bundles of tree limbs or six bags of leaves next to your regular garbage can."

City officials note this is for residential debris only -- FEMA won't pay for debris removal from businesses. Business owners will have to make their own arrangements.

In Jefferson Parish, officials are asking residents to set their debris out curbside -- the parish wants to see how much of it there is before deciding whether to activate their emergency debris removal contract.
