Friday, Orleans Parish Judge Dennis Waldron sentenced Derrick Groves to two consecutive 50-year sentences plus 100 years for the murders of Byron Jackson and Jamar Robinson when he opened fire on a 9th Ward home on Mardi Gras Day 2018. The sentencing comes after Grove’s case was delayed for years.

Groves gained national attention earlier this year, being one of ten inmates to escape from the Orleans Parish Justice Center on May 16th, 2025. On October 8th, Groves was found in Atlanta, Georgia, and was immediately brought back to Orleans Parish for prosecution.

Groves has not yet been tried on the charge of simple jailbreak.
