Doctors optimistic COVID cases will keep declining as Mardi Gras approaches

The latest numbers from the Louisiana Department of Health indicate the Omicron variant is starting to ebb, and with Mardi Gras getting ever closer, that's just what people want to see.

With Fat Tuesday five weeks away, and major parades cranking up in about three weeks, Ochsner Health chief medical officer Dr. Robert Hart says numbers are moving in the right direction.

"Hopefully if that positivity rate continues to come down we should be in a much better spot from the standpoint of the rate of spread and the positivity within the population," he said. "Between the vaccinated and those that have gotten Omicron, with almost 40 percent positivity a lot of our population has been exposed to Omicron."

He and other doctors say people should get their shots, or their boosters, if eligible, to help increase the community's resistance to any further surges.
